Medical education at both the undergraduate and post-graduate level has significantly changed in the last two decades. The revolution in the electronic media has played a significant role in this change. Problem-based learning has largely replaced the standard classroom lectures. However, the basic principles and theories of teaching and learning in medical education has remained the same. The majority of healthcare professionals are involved in clinical teaching during some stage of their career. The clinical teaching skills are as important as clinical, communication and managerial skills. It is, therefore, imperative that all the healthcare professionals develop essential teaching skills to educate the future generation of professionals. General Medical Council (GMC) good medical practice also emphasized the importance of clinical teaching and states that “if you are involved in teaching you must develop the skills, attitudes and practices of a competent teacher” (GMC 2013).
My experience of teaching and supporting learning in a small group setting is mainly as a clinical supervisor over the past year. We have a very small department (rehabilitation medicine) with only two training registrar and I was responsible clinical supervisor for one the registrar.
